Urban Reininger ‘57: From road trips to world travel

From Prohibition in the 1920s through 2003, Pennsylvania’s blue laws prohibited the sale of alcohol on Sundays, so that meant college students needed to plan ahead or make other arrangements if they ran out of booze midway through the weekend, which often led to impromptu road trips.

Urban Reininger ‘57 recalled, “Because of the local blue laws at that time, [we’d be] heading out of state for the beer.”

The chapter had a strong social reputation during his years in school and Urban said the chapter was known for “the weekend parties.” He said that when he wasn’t hanging out at the chapter house, he was across the street at Smokey Joe’s. Among the stories that Urban could share from his days in the chapter was a time when “a brother going face down in his soup.”

When he reflected on the past, Urban said Harry Mueller ‘52 was a brother who made a big impact on him during his time at Penn. Other favorable memories included chapter traditions, including “undergraduates hosting cocktail parties [at] every football home game” and “the pledge house project, such as a new powder room in the basement and re-do[ing] the kitchen.”

Urban studied transportation and was the only person from Wharton with that major. He worked in the corporate sector for 33 years, with his last position as Vice President with Coleco. After his retirement, he has traveled all over the world.

Alpha Chi Rho is Grateful for You

We want to wish all our current Phi Phi Club undergraduates as well as all of our alumni members a Happy Thanksgiving. The holiday season is always a time of reflection, celebration, memories and most importantly, gratitude.

Whether it be through donations, attending reunions or time spent volunteering, we are thankful for your support in more ways than one. As Alpha Chi Rho brothers, we share a passion for the brotherhood that contributed to our personal development, our relationships, and our lives as students and far beyond to our roles as husbands, fathers, professionals, volunteers, neighbors, and friends.

We can’t overestimate the true meaning of adding your name to the ranks of our alumni donors. We want to share our continued gratitude to those brothers listed on the honor roll HERE who have graciously given back to Alpha Cho Rho this holiday season.

Join Giving Tuesday on November 28th

As the season of giving approaches, we would like to extend our heartfelt invitation to participate in Giving Tuesday, scheduled for November 28th. Phi Phi Undergraduate Receives 2023 Resident Scholarship

At the 107th National Convention, this year’s scholarship recipients were honored at the Alpha Chi Rho Educational Foundation’s Scholarship Luncheon, and Phi Phi’s Justin Burdge was announced as one of the recipients.

According to the Alpha Chi Rho Educational Foundation, Justin was awarded the Wilbur M. “Curly” Walden Graduate Scholarship due to his research in “improving the methods we use to study the neurobiology of pain by inventing new techniques that will improve therapeutic development.” He hopes to use his research to address shortcomings in the medical treatment of individuals suffering from chronic pain.

With this scholarship, Justin will be able to dedicate his time and attention primarily to his research and to writing his thesis.

In addition to research, Justin likes to swim, play board games, and walk around New York City with his partner Abby and his dog Loki.

Looking to help support AXP?

We are always in need of support from our graduate brothers. Financial contributions are greatly welcome to use for house improvements and alumni events.

However, we are also in need of your time and talent. Our graduate board has several openings including involvement on committees including property, alumni relations, scholarship and governance. We would also like to connect our graduate brothers with the undergraduates more frequently. Some of these activities include participating in Zoom career planning and mentoring sessions.

Please contact jmiller@jemtaxllc.com if you are interested in becoming more involved in the graduate board and/or would like to have your name on the ballot for Homecoming elections.

Of course, you may also generously donate cash, stock, bitcoin or other items to the house!!

Perry Rotella ‘85: “We are truly family”

“We were the antithesis of a Frat, but we threw great parties,” Perry Rotella ’85 said when asked about what Alpha Chi Rho was known for at Penn.

Perry graduated with a dual major in Math and Economics in 1985. He remembers many funny stories from his time in the fraternity, especially ones that included causing trouble around the house.

“After one of our parties, we cleared the dining room, poured beer all over and used the dining room as a ‘beer’ slide,” he said. “We were up most of the night running, diving, and sliding through the house.”

Since graduating from Penn, Perry has enjoyed a long career in Information Technology and executive leadership, where he has held roles including the global CTO of AIG, CIO at Moody’s, CIO and Group Executive at Verisk Analytics, and Managing Director of Financial Services for Box.com.

According to Perry, he considers himself a “father first,” and has four children and one granddaughter.

Perry is also an outdoorsman who loves hiking, camping, and fishing. Most recently, he has learned how to skate, and he plays ice hockey several times a week.

Of course, he still makes time for the friendships that have endured since his Alpha Chi Rho days. Perry said he joined a close group “who have become lifelong friends,” that he sees regularly, including Mark Coogan ‘83, Ron Lewittes ‘83, Vinnie Keenan ‘80, Marty Isaac ‘85, and Bob Richard ’83

When asked which brother made the biggest impact on his time at Penn, Perry said that it is the whole group led by Mark Coogan, who started a tradition of a weekend at his cabin in Becket, Massachusetts. It is a tradition that is still going strong, and one that Perry hopes never goes away. “I think we are on Becket 45 which was aptly renamed Becket 2023,” Perry said.

Road trips have always been an Alpha Chi Rho tradition, including ones that happened unannounced. “One night at Smokey Joes in May a group of us were talking about the beach. Five hours later, we happened to end up on Virginia Beach watching the sun rise,” Perry said. “What a night and what a day!”

The bond between Perry and his brothers runs deep, as he mentioned that his brothers have been there for him through the good as well as the bad.

“Mark has always had my back as I went through a rough separation and divorce,” he said. “We are truly family.”
